Formed in the mid 70's in Europe, the Illuminates of Thanateros, otherwise known as the Pact, came into being with the goal of providing a vehicle for the practice and development of the then infant form of magic known as Chaos Magic. From small beginnings, the IOT has grown into the world-wide organisation that it is today. Recognising that for any grouping of people so large to be able to communicate and operate in anything remotely resembling a concerted effort, the Pact maintains a minimalist approach to hierarchy providing a grading structure which is representative of the level of responsibility and duties taken on by the member, and by using only those administrative offices that are necessary. The focus though is always on magical practice, on the Doing. The Pact seeks creativity, motivation, self-drive and dedication in its members. Members are encouraged to follow their own path in the Great Work and share the results with their peers. As such, the Pact always seeks fertile minds with the personal drive to experiment, to develop and to enjoy the act of practicing Chaos Magic. As well as welcoming independence of thought and direction, the Pact values the ability and the desire to work with others, performing magic in group situations being a key focus of any magical organisation. For more detailed information on the nature of the IOT as an organisation, please refer to Das Buch/The Book. Where does IOT Australia fit in? The IOT is separated (for the convenience of administration) into largely geographic areas which are known as Sections. Each Section having its own administrative personnel. In some cases, Sections will oversee neighbouring areas. These areas will operate as usual in a semi-autonomous manner (always bearing in mind Section policy) under the sponsorship of their administrative Section. These areas are known as a Satrapy. IOT Australia currently operates as a Satrapy under the administration of the American Section. This of course allows us to get on with the Great Work, while our American friends get the paperwork. :) |
